School Services

Membership Services

We are a totally unique charity, who receive no Government funding and are recognised nationally as delivering one of the most comprehensive packages to Primary Schools.

We aim to improve the lives for Young People through sport and healthy active lifestyles. We serve secondary schools mainly through providing leadership training and opportunities for students who want to gain experience, skills & knowledge of sports coaching and also the organisation and running of sporting events. Through this programme we have received National awards for their volunteering work.

Our main service is to Primary schools, for which we provide a comprehensive package including specialist sports coaching that supports up-skilling teachers in delivering high quality PE & school sport, teacher training, programmes for Gifted & Talented pupils, mentoring programme to help those pupils who like sport but suffer with low confidence and much more. We also have a number of Ambassadors who make regular visits to our schools and work with the children around various aspects which helped them succeed in their sporting achievements. Our ambassadors include Olympians, Paralympians and people who are truly inspiring in their achievements.

Each academic year concludes in over 1000 primary school children taking part in their own Mini Olympics at the Grantham Meres Athletics Stadium, which is organised by the charities secondary school volunteers; the Young Ambassador Steering Group.
The charity is expanding year on year with more schools across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands accessing the services that we provide. Please see the services that are available to our Member Primary Schools below.

PGL Caythorpe Court

We continue to have strong links with PGL allowing us to offer every inspire+ school the opportunity to access the fantastic facilities available at Caythorpe Court. This is a service PGL does not ordinarily offer to schools but a service unique to the inspire+ membership.

PGL Half Day

As part of their inspire+ membership every school has the opportunity to take advantage of a half-day visit at PGL for their students to participate in team building exercises designed to raise confidence and self esteem. This can be targeted at certain pupils or used for Gifted and Talented pupils.

PGL Access Weekend

Each year inspire+ facilitate a residential Access Weekend for year 6 pupils from across their schools to attend PGL. This is aimed at pupils who may suffer from low confidence, have never had the opportunity to go on a residential or as a reward for a pupil who has achieved a lot during the year. The weekend also gives pupils the chance to meet pupils from other schools who in the following September will be attending the same secondary school. This proves particularly helpful for pupils from village schools as a transition weekend.

Gifted & Talented Programme

inspire+’s comprehensive range of Gifted & Talented programmes range from KS1 year 1’s to KS3 year 7’s and also offer support to families for pupils to help fund equipment and training.

inspire+ use a number of their high quality specialist coaches and ambassadors to help enhance this programme along with a partnership with the University of Lincoln. The programmes focus on the generic sports skills required to develop sporting ability. These include; FUNdamentals, multi-skills, teamwork, communication, psychology, diet & nutrition and fitness & strength building.

One in five children and teenagers have an anxiety disorder, to help combat this,we are proud to be offering FRIENDS, a bespoke and unique training programme around mental well-being to our member schools.

FRIENDS covers all ages with four different programmes in which we offer CPD training in:

  • Fun Friends – KS1 – The Fun FRIENDS Program was developed by Dr Paula Barrett to help guide the social and emotional development of children aged 4 to 7 by using fun, play-based group activities. Fun FRIENDS nurtures the child’s development by teaching them to engage resilience early on, encouraging them to thrive and smoothly transition into school life.
  • Friends For Life – KS2 – FRIENDS for Life is a social skills and resilience building program that has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as an effective means to prevent anxiety for children aged 8-11. It is proven to reduce anxiety and provide participants with the tools to rise to life’s challenges, and make the most of setbacks and adversity. FRIENDS for Life also improves participants’ social and emotional skills, ability to focus, confidence, and the capacity to relax and regulate emotions.
  • My Friends youth – 12-15 years – My FRIENDS Youth is a group-based program that equips participants with the necessary tools to overcome new challenges that are commonly experienced by the 12- to 15-year old’s. This program empowers early-teens to deal with stressful situations by normalising the state of anxiety and teaching self-regulation by the “Emotion Thermometer” concept. It also develops self-confidence by arming participants with positive and creative strategies to problem solve challenges and setbacks in every area of their lives. My FRIENDS Youth is evidence-based and has been proven by research to decrease anxiety and depression in adolescents.

  • Adult resilience – 16+ – The Adult Resilience program provides positive coping and resilience skills for those aged 16+. The human brain is capable of constant change and it is never too late to learn new positive skills. The Adult Resilience program is also taught to parents to increase their resilience and coping skills and ensure that the FRIENDS “language” is be spoken at home. If the whole family participates, then everyone will flourish.

Anxiety affects over 20% of children in this age group. If it is not dealt with appropriately, anxiety can severely impact a child’s development, and can ever create problems later in life. Anxiety causes a child excessive worry about things like homework, attending social gatherings, and even non-local events like natural disasters.

To help participants remember the FRIENDS concepts, and to bring structure to the sessions we use the FRIENDS acronym:

  • Feelings (talk about your feelings and care about other people’s feelings)
  • Relax (do “milkshake” breathing, have some quiet time)
  • I can try! (we can all try our best)
  • Encourage (step plans to happy home)
  • Nurture (quality time together doing fun activities)
  • Don’t forget – be brave! (practice skills everyday with friends /family)
  • Stay happy

FRIENDS empowers participants to cope with the emotions of themselves and others by engaging with positive thoughts, emotions, and self-regulation strategies. The program also teaches creative alternatives to solving problems they would have previously shied away from, fostering the development of confidence and self-esteem. Most importantly, FRIENDS for Life encourages smiling, happiness and bravery, and facilitates smooth transitions into adolescence.

Leadership

Leadership plays an integral part in the inspire+ services to schools. As a charity we support schools and encourage leadership in several different ways for the development of both adults and young people:

Parent Volunteers

The Parent Volunteer Programme is an initiative inspire+ offers to train parents/guardians and support staff to help run after school and lunch time sporting activities at their school. The training provides the skills and knowledge required to deliver a safe, effective and child-friendly school sports club.

Playground Leaders

inspire+ continues to train teachers and school staff to deliver the Playground Leaders Course to their pupils. Young People that complete this course gain a Sports Leaders UK Young Leaders Award which is nationally recognised. The programme teaches young people to lead structured play at lunch and break times that increases physical activity levels and reduces incidents of poor behaviour.

Sports Leadership Academy

Designed to support the next generation of sports coaches/PE teachers. Students access free National Governing Body (NGB) bolt on awards and have the opportunity to be mentored by NGB development officers/coaches.

We have over 200 young people who have access to the Sports Leadership Academy Programme each year. They can gain Qualifications free of charge in different sports including Badminton, Athletics, Indoor Rowing, Tennis, Table Tennis, Hockey, Netball and Boccia. We always have a good turnout of very enthusiastic young people for all the courses we run for our students.

Those Leaders who continue to volunteer with us are then provided the opportunity to attend Sports Leaders UK courses, which are nationally recognised and provide the leaders with a formal qualification in Sports Leadership.

Young Ambassadors

The role of the Ambassadors is to inspire pupils in their school to be involved more in sport and leadership. Young Ambassadors range from Bronze Ambassadors in Primary Schools. For the first time ever Bronze Ambassadors are now recognised in Secondary schools up to year 8 as Bronze+ turning into Silver in year 9 and then through to Gold Ambassadors. inspire+ appoints Platinum Ambassadors who support Inspire+ deliver the programme. inspire+ runs this programme in partnership with the local School Games Organising Team.

The Legacy Challenge is totally bespoke and designed to encourage young people to be inspired towards a lifetime of sport, culture and healthy living.

The Legacy Challenge is a resource which has been designed for schools to inspire more young people to be physically active and lead a healthier lifestyle and has been highlighted by Ofsted as good practice in supporting whole school development areas by:

  • Encouraging pupils to become healthier and more active both at school, home and within the community
  • Increasing numbers of students participating in intra and inter-school competition
  • Developing Leadership skills amongst young people
  • Providing evidence for Ofsted (spiritual, moral, social & cultural development), Sport Premium, Healthy Schools Status and School Games Mark.
  • Logbooks are designed to meet the Healthy Rating Scheme which is due to be introduced

As well as providing schools with a platform which can meet most Whole School Development Areas, The Legacy Challenge is aligned to current government, regional and local priorities which aim to encourage young people to be physically active and leading healthier lifestyles. Mentoring Programme

We are proud to offer two different mentoring programmes to our member schools. Firstly our standard mentoring programme, which provides support and guidance to young people who have a genuine interest in sport. Secondly our brand new fitness mentoring, which focuses on the components of fitness – Flexibility, Co-ordination, Balance, and endurance. Each programme is outlined in more detail below.

Mentoring:

The mentors will help guide behaviours to learning in order to support effective participation, enhance learning, raise aspiration and achieve full potential.

Schools will identify young people who are not maximising their potential specifically in the following areas:

  • Not applying themselves academically,
  • Gifted and talented in sport,
  • Young people with behavioural or confidence issues.

The mentoring programme will work with 4 children per school from either year 5 or 6, with 6 contact sessions which will take place once a term. The sessions are conducted in either pairs or as a group. More session can be available to schools upon request. The sessions cover topics such as;

  • Growth mindsets
  • Healthy eating
  • School work
  • Hobbies
  • Attitude and body language
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Anger

At the end of each session, pupils will create a pledge to achieve by the next session to aid them on their journey. After each session, mentors will send out a report including a general overview, concerns, targets, interest of the child and any additional comments. All our mentors have attended courses and received training from well-being and mentoring workshops around the county to advance their knowledge and gain more interactive and mindful resources to use within the sessions.

Fitness Mentoring:

Lead by our ambassador, Olympian sophie allen. Schools nominate their chosen pupils for the programme to have a visit from Sophie once per term focusing on the components of fitness – Flexibility, Co-ordination, Balance, and endurance.

Each visit Sophie will test and challenge the participants to improve on each of the areas, allowing them to develop skills that will create a healthier lifestyle for the future. This has been found to provide guidance for children who aren’t receiving or taking their full opportunities with:

  • Anger
  • Confidence
  • Social skills
  • Low Activity levels
  • Hobbies

Mini Olympics

The inspire+ Mini Olympics is an annual event which has been taking place since 2008 when the South West Lincolnshire School Sports Partnership ran it. inspire+ took over its running in 2011 and since then the scale of the event has increased year on year.

The Mini Olympics takes place at the Grantham Meres Athletics and Football Stadium usually within National School Sports Week. Each year the event will have a themed focused on a sporting event happening that year. These themes have included; London & Rio Olympics, the Rugby World Cup & the Commonwealth Games. Teams that attend will be given a country associated with the theme to represent and will then be challenged to dress to represent the country and also to produce a banner promoting that country. This always makes the opening and closing ceremonies particularly special to view and engages schools in an extremely competitive banner competition with the winning school receiving the John Hicks Memorial trophy.

The Mini Olympics is a multi-day event with all inspire+ member schools invited plus associate member schools. Schools bring teams of their year 3 & 4 pupils with their year 5 & 6 Bronze Young Ambassadors supporting them. The charities secondary school Young Ambassadors and Sports Leaders are instrumental in running the day and planning prior to the day. The sporting zones that the teams participate in during the day are run by inspire+ coaches and local clubs, a great way for clubs to engage with a large number of young people from across South Kesteven promoting their club.

inspire+ Mini Olympics in numbers:

  • Over 50 Primary schools attend
  • Over 100 school teams
  • Approximately 2500 Primary school pupils take part
  • Over 70 Secondary School volunteers
  • Over 200 school staff members
  • Over 50 VIP’s, including sporting celebrities which have included; Dame Kelly Holmes, Hannah Cockroft MBE, Sam Ruddock, Jade Etherington, Chris Adcock, Anthony Clarke, Sophie Allen, Louis Deacon, Sarah Outen MBE, Jonathan Broom-Edwards and Ben Smith
  • 14 sports zones which have included; Badminton, Boccia, Wheelchair Basketball, Dance, Cheerleading, Rugby, Tennis, Athletics, Boccia, Netball and Golf.

The day is guaranteed to inspire and sends everyone home with a real buzz! Below are some quotes from people who have been involved in the games over the years.

inspire+ would like to thank everyone involved with each years event for making it such a fantastic occasion; including coaches, teachers, volunteers and of course the event sponsors who we could not run this event without!

If you are interested in being involved in the day, either with a school, running a sports zone or a local business wishing to sponsor the event please contact our office on 01476 578 137 or email Chris.Graves@inspireplus.org.uk
