Benefits of upskilling existing employees

Improved Retention and Morale

Investing in current staff shows commitment to development, increasing job satisfaction and helping you bring motivated people into key roles such as Teaching Assistants and Early Years practitioners, shaping them to meet the needs of your setting.

Cost-effective Staff Development

Apprenticeships and funded training provide structured, practical routes for staff to advance within the school. By building skills, gaining recognised qualifications, and demonstrating competency in real-world settings.

Build Skills and Confidence

Your staff will benefit from high-quality, structured training that equips them with the practical knowledge, professional skills, and confidence needed to excel in education settings, creating a workforce that drives positive outcomes for pupils and the school as a whole.

Increased Capacity and Resilience

Staff with broader or higher-level skills are more versatile, able to step into new roles, cover gaps, and respond effectively to challenges. This not only reduces pressure on colleagues but also strengthens the school’s overall stability and performance.
“I have found the apprentice programme has allowed me to reflect on my practice allowing me opportunities to enhance my teaching. Working whilst learning, has been beneficial since I can implement new ideas and strategies into my daily routines. Being a mature student has been advantageous as I can use my previous experiences and knowledge, both within education and externally, to support my learning journey.”

What does an apprenticeship look like for existing staff?

Our apprenticeship programmes are designed for existing school staff and follow national government funding regulations and the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework.

Each learner receives a bespoke training plan based on our blended learning approach. Before enrolment, we meet with the staff member and their employer to consider prior learning and experience. This ensures the training plan is tailored to each individual.

How is the training delivered?

Our blended approach consists of a range of monthly webinars and workshops, termly face to face visits and a variety of independent work based tasks such as observations, assignments and case studies.

Our bespoke off the job training offer is designed to maximise quality time and training in school, this reduces the amount of time needed to be taken away from valuable timetable time. Off the job training is a fundamental part of an apprenticeship, this training is completed during contracted working hours and can include tasks such as:

  • Webinars and workshops lead by our experienced tutors.
  • Shadowing and observing more experienced colleagues.
  • Mentoring and support from line managers and colleagues
  • Tutor one-to-ones
  • Attending meetings and briefings
  • Individual learning and study time such as completing assignments and portfolio tasks
  • Collaborative working and planning with colleagues.
Who qualifies for the courses?

There is no upper age limit to do an apprenticeship. Existing staff members as well as new recruits can benefit from using the apprenticeship levy to fund training. To be eligible for an inspire+ apprenticeship learners need to hold a GCSE C/4 or equivalent in maths and english. For level 2 apprentices, a lower threshold applies.

Recent apprenticeship levy reforms have improved flexibility training requirements, for apprentices aged over 19, employers have the discretion to decide whether a level 2 english and maths qualification are required.

Existing staff members who are interested in our programmes can hold a previous higher-level qualification such as a degree or A-Level in a different subject/sector. We have supported apprentices who are employed in a range of different school based roles, such as:

  • School Sport Coach
  • Community Coach
  • Teaching Assistant
  • SEND Teaching Assistant
  • Specialist Teaching Assistant
  • Pastoral Support Assistant
  • Behaviour / Learning Mentors
Does this change how staff are paid?

Wages are determined by employers. Existing staff members who enrol onto an apprenticeship do not tend have any change or impact to their current wage.

With over £3.3 billion of unspent apprenticeship levy funds returned to the treasury, use it before you lose it!

Your school may already be contributing to the apprenticeship levy, but if it’s not being used, that funding is simply returned to the Treasury. Instead, it could be invested in developing career paths for your existing support staff. Discover how apprenticeship funding works and how your school can make the levy work for you.
